New Year Message
2009 looks set to be a difficult year for our country and I am acutely aware that many people may be worried about what it may bring. For my part, I will continue to work hard for the people of Dacorum and highlight the issues that concern us and our families. If you, or your loved ones, find yourselves facing difficulties and you think I may be able to help please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Buncefield Third Anniversary
December proved to be a busy month. Just before the third anniversary of the Buncefield disaster, we learned that the Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency are to launch criminal prosecutions against five companies responsible. This is great news. I am delighted that at last we have the first sign of real natural justice. I am especially pleased that the companies will be prosecuted under both health and safety and environmental legislation.
Many local people had their lives turned upside down by this event and the explosion and after-effects caused severe damage to both buildings and the natural environment. It is absolutely right that those responsible be held to account.
The long-awaited report of the Buncefield Inquiry was also published and as the Inquiry is wound up, the incident falls out of the remit of the Work and Pensions Secretary. I have been pushing the Government to ensure that there is still a Minister responsible.
I am particularly unhappy at proposals to store aviation fuel on the site again – possibly as early as this month. I firmly believe that local people and the local Council should be given a say, which at the moment they are not…
Christmas Card Competition
Since becoming MP I have held an annual competition at The Collett School in Hemel Hempstead to design my Christmas Card. The school does excellent work with pupils who have a wide range of learning difficulties. I always enjoy my visits there and we enjoy selecting a winner. This year’s winner was Craig East. A selection of entries can be seen on my website at http://www.mikepenning.com/christmas_card_2008.htm.
Veterans Badges
I am delighted to announce that we will be holding another veterans badge presentation in March. Our last such event in August was enormously successful. Our country’s ex-servicemen and women ought to be recognised for services to their country and I hope they will come forward to claim this badge and wear it on a day-to-day basis.
Anyone who has ever served in the armed forces is eligible. There are also badges for the Merchant Navy, Women’s Land Army, Women’s Timber Corps and Bevin Boys. Application forms can be downloaded from my website or call my office 01442 450444 for further information.
