Employment Figures

11th September 2018

Sir Mike Penning, Member of Parliament for Hemel Hempstead, has welcomed today’s Office of National Statistics figures that show a further fall in unemployment in the Hemel Hempstead constituency.

The number of unemployed claimants in the Hemel Hempstead Constituency in August 2018 was 830. This is 160 lower than in August 2017 and 35 lower than in July 2018. This represents 1.5% of the economically active population aged 16-64.

There were 140 claimants between the ages of 18 and 24; which is 35 lower than in August 2017.

Sir Mike said:

“Unemployment continues to fall to record lows, with youth unemployment down 45% nationally since 2010. This is great news for the next generation as they start their working life with a wide range of opportunities open to them.

“Also, in the last six months, wages have been growing in real terms.

“In the rest of the EU, unemployment rates are more than double that in the UK. This puts us in a good position in the run up to Brexit next spring.”
