Hemel Hempstead MP, Sir Mike Penning, has put his name to amendments to the Finance Bill which, if passed, will result in the bringing forward the date of the reduction in Fixed-Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT) maximum permitted stake to April next year. The new maximum stake will be £2, rather than the current £100.
Sir Mike said:
“I was very disappointed when the Chancellor announced that the cut in the maximum stake for FOBTs would not happen until October 2019. I am delighted that a large number of MPs think the same way and I am now hopeful that the Government will concede on this. I have received a large number of emails asking me to support the amendments and I am happy to do so.
“The speed at which gamblers can lose vast sums of money on these machines is shocking and can be completely devastating for the gambler.
“I have very real concerns about a number of issues associated with gambling – the use of credit cards, access to ATMs in casinos and pop-up adverts for ‘free bets’. In the recent past, I have tabled motions on these issues in Parliament and I will continue to campaign on this.”
