I have been contacted by many people about the alleged assault on Belly Mujinga.

Firstly, my sincere condolences go out to the family during this difficult time.
 
The alleged assault on Belly Mujinga, a Govia Thameslink Railway employee who was working in the ticket office at Victoria station on 5 April, is abhorrent and disgraceful.
 
I pay tribute to the frontline keyworkers who have been instrumental in keeping the country moving during the biggest health crisis of our generation. These people risk their lives in this war against a deadly disease in order that the rest of us may continue with ours. We have witnessed a certain callous individual committing an atrocious and despicable crime. As the Prime Minister stated on Wednesday 3 June, “the fact that she was abused for doing her job is utterly appalling”.
 
As you will have read, following extensive inquiries, British Transport Police have confirmed that the attack did not lead to Belly’s death.
 
Nevertheless, I completely agree that the perpetrator should feel the full force of the law. There is absolutely no room in our society for such disgusting and criminal behaviour and I am confident that the alleged assault will be dealt with appropriately by the justice system.
 
I have written to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick DBE QPM, to ask what investigations are taking place and what developments are being made in terms of charging the offender.
