Sir Mike Penning backs the British Sign Language Bill and will serve on the BSL Committee this week.

Sir Mike said:

“I am delighted that this Bill has reached Committee Stage and I am very hopeful that it will pass all stages in the Commons and Lords so that BSL is confirmed as the UK’s official language. There are approximately 150,000 people who use BSL in the UK and, once this Bill is law, it will be easier for BSL users to communicate with Government and other official bodies. 

“Also, the rest of us will become more aware of BSL and, hopefully, many will take the time to learn some basic BSL.”
