Mike Penning visited Abbeyfield houses in the Old Town and Leverstock Green. Residents call for a pedestrian crossing on Bedmond Road.

On Wednesday 22nd February, Mike Penning visited first the Abbeyfield house in George Street in Hemel Old Town. After being given a tour by Chairman, John Stevens, they then went on to a second Abbeyfield house in Leverstock Green. Mike met with residents, staff and volunteers.

The organisation, which covers Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted owns three houses for the elderly in the area. Each house is run by a full-time housekeeper and a supporting management team of enthusiastic volunteers. The support of the volunteers enables Abbeyfield to keep costs reasonable.

The residents have their own rooms with bathrooms but enjoy meals cooked for them by the housekeeper. The houses are deliberately kept to a moderate size, to ensure they maintain a “family atmosphere”.

Abbeyfield currently has two vacancies in Leverstock Green and one in the Old Town.

After the visit, Mike Penning said: “It is great to see local people supporting the elderly in this way. It ensures the elderly can stay living in the community with independence whilst receiving support such as having their meals prepared.

“In Leverstock Green residents raised local need for a pedestrian crossing on Bedmond Road. This is a very valid request. I have already written to the County Council and will pursue the matter.”
