Mike Penning met with WRVS volunteers at a “thank you” coffee morning in Leverstock Green on Friday, 17th February. He expressed his thanks to them for the tremendous work they did after the Buncefield Oil Depot explosion and fire where they provided refreshments for the emergency crews – many of whom had come long distances to support the Hertfordshire emergency services.

The WRVS has always held a special place in Mike’s heart. “As a 16-year-old entering the harsh disciplinary regime of the army, I will always remember the WRVS ladies who offered us much-needed TLC and support,” he said.

After the coffee morning, Mike said:

“On the day of the Buncefield explosion, I was able to see first hand how effective the WRVS can be in an emergency situation. All the emergency service personnel will join with me in thanking the WRVS for providing refreshments during that period.

“However, I also commend the commitment and dedication of the WRVS volunteers, not just in times of emergency but in everyday situations in our local communities.”
