Sir Mike Penning attends launch of Rural Shop Report

Hemel Hempstead MP, Sir Mike Penning, attended the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) launch of their Rural Shop Report 2023.

There are over 17,000 rural shops in the UK, and they are a critical part of the communities they serve. Rural shops are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of their customers and no two are the same.

However, rural shops are facing unique challenges compared to their more urban counterparts, with many not having access to a secure and reliable broadband connection and struggling with supply chain issues that make it more difficult to get a regular supply of products without paying excessive delivery charges.

The loss of any rural shop can have a devastating impact on the community that it serves.

Sir Mike said:

“I was delighted to meet Crabtree Lane’s Nisa Local store owner Kishor Patel at the ACS Rural Shop Report launch this week. Rural shops play a vital role in our communities, and we have some fantastic local shops in the villages in my constituency which are a lifeline for many.

“I am happy to support the ACS campaign which calls for support for shops in rural areas, better digital infrastructure and ensuring free ATMs in rural communities.”
